9 Sunnahs of Sleeping We Should Follow

Sunnahs of Sleeping

Sunnahs of sleeping are the Sayings and actions that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) used to do before he slept.

Muslims must follow the Messenger, SAW, in his actions and words. We should follow the Sunnahs of sleeping thanks to their great virtue in this world and the hereafter.

1- Sleeping early, unless needed, and waking up in the last third to do night prayer

2- Ablution Before Sleep

The Prophet Muhammad – SAW – said to Al-Bara bin Azeb, may God be pleased with him: “Whenever you go to bed, perform ablution like that for the prayer, and lie on your right side.”

3- Shaking Off the Bed

The Prophet Muhammad – SAW – said: “When one of you goes to his bed, let him dust off his bed with the inside of his lower garment, for he does not know what came onto it after he left it.” Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

4- Sleeping on the right side

The Prophet Muhammad – SAW – said to Al-Bara bin Azeb, may God be pleased with him (and lie on your right side.) Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

5- Placing the right hand under the right cheek

Abu Dawood narrated that the Prophet Muhammad – SAW – puts his right hand under his cheek when he goes to sleep.

6- Read some surahs from the Holy Quran

• Reading Surat Al-Kafiroon

• The Prophet Muhammad – SAW – used to gather his palms, then blow through them and read Surat Al-Ikhlas, Surat Al-Nas, and Surat Al-Falaq, then wipe with them what he can reach of his body, starting with them on his head and face, and whatever comes from his body. He does that three times.), narrated by Bukhari.

• Reading al-Kursi vrse

• Reading the last two verses of Surat Al-Baqarah

7- Takbeer (Allahu akbar) and Glorifying Allah

The Messenger of God – SAW – said when Fatima – may God be pleased with her – asked him a servant:  “May I inform you of something better than that? When you go to bed, recite “Subhan Allah’ thirty-three times, ‘Al hamduli l-lah’ thirty-three times, and ‘Allahu Akbar’ thirty-four times. `Ali added, ‘I have never failed to recite it ever since.”

 8- Duaas, when going to bed

The Messenger of God – SAW – Used to Say:

• “O Allah (SWT) With your name, I die, and I live.”

• “In Your name, my Lord, I lay down my side, and by you, I raise it again. If Take my soul, then have mercy upon it, and if return my soul, then protect it in the manner You do so with Your righteous slaves.”

• “O Allah, save me from Your punishment on the Day when You resurrect – or gather – Your slaves”, three times.”

• Putting the right hand under the cheek and saying:

“O Allah! I have surrendered myself over to you and have turned my face towards You, leaving all my affairs to You and depending on You and putting my trust in You. expecting Your reward and fearing Your punishment. There is neither fleeing from You nor refuge but with You. I believe in the Book (Qur’an) which You have revealed and in Your Prophet (Muhammad) whom You have sent.’ If you then die on that night, then you will die as a Muslim, and if you awake alive in the morning, then you will receive the reward.”

• “Praise be to Allah who has fed us, given us drink, satisfied us and given us refuge. Many there are who have no one to provide a sufficiency for them or provide them with refuge.”

9- Duaa, when waking up

“All Praise is for Allah who gave us life after taking it from us and unto Him is the resurrection.”
